Orioles at the plate: Garrett Atkins doubled, singled and scored the game's first run. Left fielder Felix Pie added an RBI single in the fifth. Justin Turner had a three-run double in a four-run eighth.
Red Sox on the mound:
Boston starter John Lackey allowed two runs on six hits over five innings, fanning a pair of Orioles and walking none. The pair of runs were the first official ones surrendered by Lackey in four spring starts. Lefty Alan Embree, who was signed by the Sox on March 20, struggled in his first appearance for Boston since 2005, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Orioles on the mound:
Hernandez, who is still officially in the mix for Baltimore's fifth-starter spot, retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before loading the bases in the fourth. Hernandez proceeded to strike out the side, and he held the Red Sox scoreless over five innings. He struck out six and allowed four hits and two walks in the 90-pitch outing. Reliever Cla Meredith tossed a scoreless sixth.
Boston outfielder Jeremy Hermida was replaced by Mitch Dening prior to the bottom of the third inning. Hermida exited the game with right hamstring tightness. ... Orioles closer Michael Gonzalez tossed two scoreless innings in Baltimore's Double-A game against the Tampa Bay Rays prospects.
Grapefruit League records:
