Rain washes away Tuesday's Yanks-O's clash

Postponed game to be made up as day-night doubleheader on Sept. 12

Rain washes away Tuesday's Yanks-O's clash

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles' continuing quest to create more separation between themselves and the Yankees in the American League East will have to wait another day. Tuesday's game between Baltimore and New York at Oriole Park at Camden Yards has been postponed due to rain. The game will be made up on Friday, Sept. 12, as a day-night doubleheader at 1:05 p.m. ET and 7:05 p.m.

The game was scheduled to be the second of a three-game series between Baltimore and New York that will conclude on Wednesday. The O's have won seven of their 10 meetings with the Yankees this season, outscoring them, 55-28.

Chris Tillman will oppose Yankees righty Michael Pineda, who will make his first start since April 23, on Wednesday. Wei-Yin Chen, who was scheduled to pitch Tuesday, will instead start Friday in Cleveland.

The rainout didn't come as a shock to manager Buck Showalter. The storm, which has caused flooding throughout Maryland all day, has been in the forecast since the end of last week.

"It stayed true to course," Showalter said in a mostly empty clubhouse at Camden Yards. "We were able to tell our players not to get on the road today, most of them as you can tell, which is great."

The postponement buys the Orioles some extra time to make a decision on shortstop J.J. Hardy and third baseman Manny Machado. Hardy hasn't played in either of the past two games with a sprained left thumb, and Machado left Monday's 11-3 win against New York with a sprained right knee ligament. Both Hardy and Machado had MRIs on Tuesday.

By Sept. 12, when the Yankees return to Oriole Park, rosters will have expanded and the O's could have Hardy and Machado back at full strength.

"When they say play, we play," Showalter said, "whether it's with J.J. or without, or with Manny or without. It's not a given they're going to be with you in September. Be careful about outsmarting yourself. I am going to try not to."
