ORIOLES 3, PIRATES 2 at Bradenton, Fla. Wednesday, March 10
Orioles at the plate: First baseman Luke Scott, who is hitting .500 this spring, drove in two of Baltimore's three first-inning runs with a two-out single. Scott reached base in two of his three plate appearances. Ty Wigginton went 1-for-2 with an RBI single. Outfielder Adam Jones connected for his second extra-base hit of the spring with a first-inning triple.
Pirates at the plate: Third baseman Pedro Alvarez went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored. Ramon Vazquez singled in each of his two at-bats and drove in his first run of the spring. Garrett Jones' first-inning double was the Pirates' only other extra-base hit of the night.
Orioles on the mound: Brad Bergesen allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings. Jason Berken tossed two scoreless innings and allowed just one baserunner. Luis Lebron and Mark Hendrickson each made scoreless relief appearances as well.
Pirates on the mound: After getting two quick strikeouts to start the night, Zach Duke got knocked around a bit in the first. The lefty gave up four hits and walked two with two outs in the first, which gave the Orioles an early three-run lead. Duke did settle down, though, allowing just one baserunner in the rest of his 2 2/3-inning outing. Daniel McCutchen made a strong case for the fifth rotation spot with two perfect innings. He struck out two.
Worth noting: Bergesen's appearance on Wednesday was the first for the right-hander this spring. He had been slowed earlier in camp by a strained right shoulder that he injured while filming a commercial for the team back in December. ... With an 0-for-2 day at the plate, Pirates outfielder Brandon Moss is still looking for his first hit in Grapefruit League play. ... Wednesday's game at McKechnie Field is the only home night game scheduled for the Pirates this spring.
Grapefruit League records: Orioles 2-6; Pirates 3-5-1
Up next: Baltimore will travel south to Fort Myers, Fla., on Thursday to face the Twins in another evening contest. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
Right-hander Kevin Millwood will start the game for the Orioles and will be looking to bounce back from a rough Grapefruit League debut. Millwood recorded just two outs while allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk against Detroit on Saturday.
The competition for the fifth spot in the Pirates' rotation continues on Thursday as Kevin Hart takes the mound for a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Rays. Hart, who is battling McCutchen for that final spot in the rotation, dealt with some control issues his last time out.
Jeff Karstens and Jack Taschner -- both of whom are fighting for a spot in the bullpen -- are also expected to take the mound for Pittsburgh.
