RAYS 8, ORIOLES 3
at Sarasota, Fla.
Monday, March 9
Rays at the plate: Red-hot Sean Rodriguez singled, and the Rays capitalized on a pair of miscues from Orioles catcher Chad Moeller to score an early run in the first inning. Evan Longoria had a double and two RBIs, while Matt Joyce went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Dioner Navarro added a pair of hits and drove in a run. Tim Beckham, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, singled in a run.
Orioles at the plate:
Moeller blasted a leadoff homer in the third to help erase his defensive woes (which included a throwing error and catcher indifference). Moeller singled again in the fifth as part of three consecutive hits to push across another run. Rhyne Hughes singled and scored.

Rays on the mound: Facing the Orioles for the second straight outing, Jeff Niemann was dominant, yielding only Moeller's homer. The big right-hander allowed two hits and struck out two. Randy Choate allowed a run on three hits in the fifth.
Orioles on the mound:
Victim to some lackluster defense, Chris Tillman allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over 2 1/3 innings. The right-hander wasn't as sharp as his first spring outing against Rays, picking up a walk and a strikeout in the 49-pitch effort. Reliever Cla Meredith recorded the final two outs of the third, while Dennis Sarfate gave up a run on one hit over two innings. Jake Arrieta allowed three runs in his inning, raising his spring ERA to 9.00. Alfredo Simon tossed two perfect innings to cap the game.
In a weird twist of positions, Reid Brignac and Rodriguez combined on a double play to end the fourth inning. Brignac, a natural shortstop, started at second base while second baseman Rodriguez was at shortstop.
Grapefruit League records:
