Left-hander Brian Gonzalez, the Orioles' top pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, made his professional debut Wednesday in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He threw one perfect inning against the Red Sox.

Gonzalez began the game by striking out center fielder Derek Miller, and then retired the next two batters without incident.

The Orioles lost their first- and second-round picks in the Draft because they signed free agents Nelson Cruz and Ubaldo Jimenez. That left them without a pick until the third round, when they chose Gonzalez with the 90th overall selection.

Gonzalez went undefeated in his senior season at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was committed to pitch for the University of Miami before signing with the Orioles a week after the Draft.

Gonzalez's debut came one day after right-hander Pat Connaughton, the Orioles' second pick, made his professional debut with short-season Class A Aberdeen. He also retired all three batters he faced in order.
