Orioles take UCLA lefty reliever in seventh round

|

As the Orioles continue to try to stockpile talent in the later rounds after sitting out the first two, Baltimore selected Max Schuh, a pitcher from UCLA, in the seventh round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.

Schuh is the fifth pitcher that the O's have taken, the third lefty and the second player with two-sport experience at the collegiate level. Schuh was also a quarterback for the football team in 2010-11.

The Draft concludes on Saturday, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 11-40 beginning on MLB.com at 1 p.m. ET.

At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Schuh has the physical makeup of a power pitcher, but he uses three pitches effectively.

The relief pitcher logged 29 innings as a redshirt junior in 2014, and allowed just 22 hits and five earned runs for a 1.55 ERA. Schuh also struck out 34 batters and walked 10.

As a sophomore, Schuh made 12 appearances, but totaled just 2 1/3 innings, although he did not allow a run.

Schuh did not appear in any games as a member of the Bruins football team.
