ARLINGTON -- Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez was scratched from Thursday's start as he underwent an MRI on his right side on Wednesday afternoon, and the team is leaning toward putting him on the 15-day disabled list.

"MRI was better than we thought it might be, so we don't think it's something long term," manager Buck Showalter said after Wednesday's 6-5 win. "With the five days behind us now and if he can't pitch Saturday, we'd probably try to clear it completely up. But from what all indications are he will probably be able to pitch within the DL period, but you don't know for sure. I think if he can't pitch Saturday, we'll DL him."

Gonzalez has turned in four consecutive quality starts for the Orioles and, while he reported to be slightly better on Wednesday than Tuesday, pain in that area is generally a pesky oblique issue.

Chris Tillman will start in his place, on regular rest, with the Orioles contemplating having either Kevin Gausman -- who pitched one inning for Triple-A Wednesday -- or T.J. McFarland start Saturday if the results of Gonzalez's MRI are not favorable.

"He said he did a lot of ab work, two or three days ago, he thought that might be it," Showalter said of possible origins for the injury. "But he said, 'Heck, I've been doing that the whole year. For the most part.'"

While McFarland is currently in the Orioles' bullpen, pitching 1 2/3 innings on Wednesday, Gausman had his outing shortened up so he can be an option for this weekend.

Tillman, who was originally slated to get extra rest and go Saturday, took his regular side session on Tuesday.
