Orioles sign five to Minor League contracts

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles announced Monday that they have signed five players to Minor League contracts: right-handers Tim Alderson and Brock Huntzinger, left-hander Nick Additon and outfielders Chih-Hsien Chiang and Kyeong Kang.

Alderson, acquired in the O's swap in July with the Pirates for Russ Canzler, went 1-2 with a 6.27 ERA in 15 appearances for Triple-A Norfolk, and he went 5-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 44 games combined at two levels and three affiliates in 2013. The 25-year-old is a former first-round Draft pick of the Giants.

Huntzinger, also 25, pitched for the Red Sox's Triple-A affiliate last season and had spent seven years in Boston's system since being drafted. Between Pawtucket and Double-A Portland, Huntzinger was 5-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 68 2/3 innings.

Additon comes from the Cardinals' organization and went 9-7 with a 4.10 ERA in 24 games (21 starts) for Triple-A Memphis last season. He was drafted by St. Louis in the 47th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.

Chiang, who hails from Taiwan, was originally drafted by the Red Sox and later sent to Seattle in a package deal for Erik Bedard. He signed as a Minor League free agent with Texas last winter, and the left-handed hitter had a .263/.298/.416 line with the Rangers' Double-A team.

Kang has been part of the Rays' system the past seven years, and the left-handed hitter posted a .264/.365/.479 line between Class A and Double-A last season. After attending high school in the Atlanta area, he became the first South Korean-born player chosen in the Draft.
