Jurrjens designated for assignment

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles designated right-hander Jair Jurrjens for assignment on Friday afternoon, meaning the organization has 10 days to trade him, release him or have him clear waivers.

Signed to a Minor League deal this offseason, Jurrjens -- who competed for a rotation spot this spring -- pitched in two games for Baltimore, allowing four earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. In 16 starts for Triple-A Norfolk, the former All-Star went 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 16 starts.

"At his young age, I wouldn't close the door," manager Buck Showalter said of the 27-year-old Jurrjens, whose previous injuries caused a snag regarding a big league contract with Baltimore this winter.

"Jair still has a chance to pitch competitively up here. He has shown periods down there, it's just been inconsistent ... sometimes the physical part of it takes a while to come. Someone may be old and the golden goose when it hits. It's all about timing sometimes."

Jurrjens could still remain in the organization and be outrighted back to Triple-A if he clears waivers.
