The Orioles promoted reliever Jairo Asencio from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday. The right-hander will assume the roster spot of hurler Jair Jurrjens, who the club designated for assignment.
Asencio compiled a 4-0 record and a 2.15 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings with Norfolk. He racked up 20 saves, the top mark in the International League. In 39 career Major League appearances with the Braves, Indians and Cubs, Asencio has posted a 5.23 ERA.
The Orioles acquired the 30-year-old from Milwaukee in late March for a player to be named or cash.
Jurrjens pitched in two contests for Baltimore this season, allowing four earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. In 16 starts for the Tides, the former All-Star has logged a 6-6 record and a 4.18 ERA.
