The Orioles acquired outfielder Eric Thames from the Mariners on Sunday in exchange for Minor League infielder Ty Kelly.
Baltimore subsequently optioned Thames, who is sidelined with a broken bone in his left hand, to Triple-A Norfolk. Kelly will head to Triple-A Tacoma.
"It was a good deal for both clubs. Good hitter," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Thames. "Really has an interesting hitting resume and an option."
In 57 games with Tacoma this season, Thames batted .295 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs. The 26-year-old totes a career .250 average with 21 homers and 62 RBIs in 181 Major League contests with the Blue Jays and Mariners.
Kelly, 24, carries a career .283 average in five Minor League seasons in the Orioles' system. He batted .283 with one home run and 47 RBIs in 72 games with Double-A Bowie this season.
