Orioles team up with classrooms to provide "Condition U" program for youth

The Orioles and Living Classrooms have teamed up to develop a healthy lifestyles program through which 25 middle school students will work with JOE HOGARTY and RYAN CROTIN from the Baltimore Orioles strength and conditioning staff, in partnership with the health and wellness staff at the Patterson Park Youth Sports and Education Center Powered by Under Armour.

The program, "Condition U," will be held twice a week at the Patterson Park Youth Sports and Education Center Powered by Under Armour. Through this program, the Orioles will promote healthy living and encourage youth to take part in athletics while educating them on the tools needed to maintain long-term physical fitness. Participants will include boys and girls ages 12-14 from East Baltimore who have shown interest across a variety of sports. Students will meet with Orioles strength and conditioning coaches once each month to test their progression in seven areas of fitness building defined by the National Presidential Youth Fitness Program: speed, relative strength, strength endurance, lower body power, aerobic power, agility and functional mobility.

The program will run from May through August on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the kickoff event taking place on Wednesday, May 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All participants will receive tickets to an Orioles game, and the two most improved students at the end of the program will be recognized on field during a special pregame ceremony on Tuesday, September 10 before the Orioles take on the New York Yankees.

SPECIAL CEREMONIES

WINNER OF MLB'S HONORARY BAT GIRL CONTEST

The Orioles, Major League Baseball and Susan G. Komen for the Cure have announced the winner of the Honorary Bat Girl contest, a campaign to recognize incredible MLB fans who are going to bat against breast cancer in their daily lives. The winner of the contest for the Orioles is KRISTA McKENZIE-McELWAIN of Walkersville, MD, a mother of three who was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in October 2011. She works two jobs, one as a pediatric nutritionist and the other in financial aid at her daughter's school. McKenzie-McElwain will be recognized in a special on-field ceremony tonight prior to the Orioles' 7:05 p.m. game against the San Diego Padres and will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch. She will also receive a Majestic customized jersey, a certificate signed by the Commissioner, a pink Rawlings stitched baseball, pink wristbands and pink ribbon decals.

The Orioles have also donated 200 tickets to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Maryland supporters to attend the game on May 14. Members from Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Maryland will be at the Community Booth located by Gate D and will have an auction table set up next to the booth with commemorative items including a pink bat signed by current Orioles and pink Under Armour shoes signed by Manager BUCK SHOWALTER.

CHALLENGER LEAGUE

On Saturday, May 18th, Oriole Advocates Challenger Baseball and OriolesReach will welcome 800 participants of the Challenger League baseball program from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Challenger teams provide children with physical and developmental challenges the opportunity to enjoy the experiences that playing baseball provides. During a pre-game ceremony each year, one member of the Challenger Baseball Community is awarded the John Salony Memorial Award for his or her efforts in supporting Challenger Baseball.

John Salony had a vision to provide recreational activities for children with special needs when few such activities existed and co-founded Challenger Baseball in Maryland over 25 years ago. This year the Orioles are pleased to have Charlene Salony to present the John Salony Memorial Award to Wayne Trigg for his dedication and support to the Frederick, MD Challenger Little League. Wayne is passionate about ensuring that all ballplayers with disabilities are the safest they can be on the field. Wayne ensures that there is complete safety at all games by inspecting the fields before the games, ensuring that all coaches have their equipment on hand, that all players use helmets and that each player is protected by another individual while out in the field. He was instrumental in developing a safety and CPR training program for all league managers, coaches, team moms, and volunteers.

Representatives from Oriole Advocates Challenger Baseball will be on hand on May 18, including Chairman George Bollock, President of the Oriole Advocates, Bill Moon, and President of the Oriole Advocates Charitable Foundation, Don Blum.
