In a perfect world, the Orioles would like Patton, who last pitched in a big league game Aug. 12, to make back-to-back appearances and be stretched out to go more than an inning, but manager Buck Showalter said they will wait and see how Sunday goes before mapping out a schedule.
"We are hoping at the worst we get him in Boston [next weekend]," he said of Patton. "And Jimmy [Thome] hopefully right behind him."
Thome, who has been rehabbing back from a herniated disk in his neck, is hoping to bat Monday or Wednesday in the instructional games.
"They were part of some good things that we'd like to take advantage of again," Showalter said of the possibility of having Patton and Thome back. "So, it would help anytime. But this time of year, it's as many bullets as you can arm yourself with. It'd be two guys we know are capable of helping us."
