Orioles' Path to the Postseason: Sept. 14, 2012
The Orioles won their 13th straight extra-inning game on Thursday, a 3-2 victory over the Rays in 14 innings. That gave Baltimore an 81-62 record and locked up a non-losing season for the first time since 1997.

The O's ended the night tied atop the American League East with the Yankees, who defeated the Red Sox, 2-0, at Fenway Park.

Baltimore faces a tough weekend series with Oakland, which leads the AL Wild Card race, before going to Seattle and Boston. The Orioles are 13-2 in extra-inning games and 64-0 in games where they led after seven innings. It's a big reason for their success this season.

"We have a great bond together," said Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, who had the walk-off hit in the 14th on Thursday. "We have a great bond. The thing as a team is we do the best we can do. The biggest thing is we're playing as a team and we're staying focused."

Magic numbers
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
