Guthrie ready to go in Fenway finale

|
The Orioles followed the regular prescription for a win on Wednesday, when they got some early offense to go with a quality start. It all unraveled late, though, but Baltimore will still have a chance to beat Boston and win its fourth straight series in Thursday's matinee.

Jeremy Guthrie returns to the scene of his most memorable start in the series finale. Guthrie pitched eight shutout innings against Boston on Mother's Day, but came out in the ninth after an error. The Red Sox went on to pound Baltimore's bullpen and take a 6-5 win -- the team's only victory when trailing after eight innings this season.

Tim Wakefield will get the ball for the Red Sox, and he'll attempt to keep his recent streak alive. Wakefield has pitched at least six innings in six straight starts -- five of them victories. Boston is 5-2 against the Orioles in 2007 and has gotten the best of Baltimore in the season series in seven of the last eight years.

Pitching matchup
BAL: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (7-3, 2.89 ERA)
Guthrie is 5-0 with a 2.91 ERA in road games and 1-2 with a 2.17 mark during the day.

BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield (12-9, 4.59 ERA)
Wakefield's ERA has been higher than 5.00 in each of the last two months, but he's 7-4 over that span.

Player to watch
Kevin Millar, a familiar face to Boston fans, is batting .320 (39-for-122) in his last 36 games, a streak that brought his season average from .238 to .273.
