VandenHurk outrighted, Rupe joins roster
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Orioles right-hander Rick VandenHurk cleared waivers on Wednesday and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk, where he is projected to be part of the team's starting rotation.

The move cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Josh Rupe, a reliever whose contract was selected. Rupe will serve as one of the team's long men in the bullpen; he allowed his first earned runs of the spring in his final Grapefruit League outing on Tuesday, pitching to a 1.23 ERA in 14 2/3 innings.

VandenHurk, who was acquired from the Marlins at the Trade Deadline last season in exchange for reliever Will Ohman, struggled in his first camp with the Orioles. In four appearances totaling six innings, he allowed 12 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits and eight walks. His ERA during Spring Training was 13.50.

VandenHurk will join a Tides rotation that is expected to include Zach Britton, Ryan Drese and Chris Jakubauskas.

The moves leave the Orioles with 25 players on their roster, with 13 position players and 12 pitchers.
