In the midst of a six-game road trip against the top two teams in the American League East, the Orioles need all the help they can get.
Looking to turn around Baltimore's 3-6 start to August, Kris Benson will return to the mound for the first time since July 25 to face Jason Johnson and the Red Sox on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
"You have to pitch against this [Boston] club and if you don't pitch against them, you're not going to beat them," Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo said. "It's happened to us so far this year. You have to go out and pitch a good game against them."
Benson should be anxious to return to the mound after having a tough month in July. He lost four straight decisions to start out the month, and then was placed on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right elbow Aug. 4, retroactive to July 26.
Benson earned a no-decision against Kansas City in his last outing, allowing three earned runs on eight hits.
He is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA against Boston in his career, and is 0-1 with an 18.69 ERA at Fenway.
BAL: RHP Kris Benson (9-9, 4.71 ERA)
The right-hander is 0-4 with a 6.52 ERA in his last five starts, and has not won since June 28.
BOS: RHP Jason Johnson (3-11, 5.96 ERA)
The sinkerballer finally has a positive outing to utilize as momentum. In six innings of a no-decision against the Devil Rays, Johnson allowed just three hits and one unearned run. He would have had the win, only to see the Boston bullpen squander a 6-2 lead. One of Johnson's best performances of the season came against the Orioles, when he held them to one run over seven innings in a win on April 18.
Player to watch
Miguel Tejada is batting .326 (14-for-43) with two home runs in his career against Johnson.
