Fox's double overturned, ruled homer

BOSTON -- Orioles designated hitter Jake Fox's RBI double in the ninth inning was overturned and ruled to be a two-run homer in Baltimore's 9-3 loss to the Red Sox on Saturday night.

Matt Wieters worked a two-out walk off reliever Robert Manuel and Fox hit a long ball to left field that sailed over outfielder Eric Patterson's head and appeared to hit the top of the Green Monster. Fox apparently thought it was a homer, assuming a slow trot out of the box in anticipation, but Patterson fielded the ball and Fox was initially ruled to have a double.

Bench coach Jeff Datz came out -- in lieu of ejected interim manager Juan Samuel -- to argue that it was a home run, and the play was put under review. It was the eighth time that a play has been put under review at Fenway Park and the fifth time this season. The last time the Red Sox used review was June 18 against the Dodgers, when J.D. Drew's double was overturned and ruled to be a home run.

It was Fox's third homer of the year, his first as an Oriole, and came on a 0-1 pitch.
