Roberts gets go-ahead to resume activities

BALTIMORE -- It was a welcome sight to see Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts on the field taking ground balls and playing catch prior to Tuesday's series opener against the Athletics.

"Roberts is back, he got cleared by Doctor [William] Goldiner [Tuesday]," manager Dave Trembely said. "He'll resume some baseball activities and in all likelihood when we leave [for Toronto following Thursday's game] he'll be on his way to Florida to see if we can get that going."

Roberts was originally scheduled to go to Sarasota, Fla., during the team's last road trip -- which started May 19 in Texas -- but he was hospitalized with pneumonia on the Monday prior, and has remained in Baltimore since.

When Roberts departs for Florida later this week, he will report to the team's Spring Training complex in Sarasota with the expectation being that he will gradually work his way back into baseball shape.

Roberts has been sidelined since April 9 with a herniated disc in his lower back, an injury that was originally suffered during offseason workouts but was reaggravated during a slide into second base in the team's home opener.
